Job Purpose

This three-year post (100% FTE) will be responsible for delivering the design, analysis and dissemination of the 'MCAT' research project, funded by Kidney Research UK and hosted by the world-leading Centre for Patient-Reported Outcomes Research (CPROR) at the University of Birmingham. The post holder will be involved in development of a new 'Item Bank' and Multidimensional Computerized Adaptive Testing (MCAT) aimed at supporting the care of patients with chronic kidney disease.

Main duties
  • To undertake all day-to-day project management activities.
  • To lead on the project ethics and R&D application and any amendments.
  • To develop the study protocol and prepare for publication.
  • To co-ordinate study recruitment.
  • To undertake all qualitative data collection and analysis.
  • To undertake quantitative data analysis with the support of a costed statistician.
  • To contribute to the writing of reports and papers for publication.
  • To organise, attend and minute relevant project meetings.
  • To disseminate research findings using appropriate and effective media, including publications in leading journals, presentation to conferences and meetings.
  • To present research outputs, including drafting academic publications, reports or parts thereof, for example at seminars and as posters.
  • To contribute to Institute/School research-related activities and administration.
  • To support any other appropriate activities that will help to achieve the objectives of the Centre for Patient-Reported Outcomes.
  • To contribute to the life of the University by participating in other appropriate activities including seminar attendance.
  • To develop research objectives and proposals for own or joint research, with assistance of a mentor if required.
  • To contribute to writing bids for research funding.
  • To provide guidance, as required, to support staff and any students who may be assisting with the research.
  • To deal with problems that may affect the achievement of research objectives and deadlines.
  • To undertake all day-to-day project management activities.

Scope of the role

  • Analyse and interpret research findings and results
  • Contribute to generating funding
  • Contribute to licensing or spin out deals with demonstrated commercial success (such as revenues, asset or company sales, IP generated) and/or public understanding of the discipline or similar


Person Specification
  • First degree in area of specialism and normally, a higher degree relevant to research area or equivalent qualifications
  • Evidence of a high level of qualitative and quantitative research skills
  • Good knowledge of patient-reported outcomes and research methods and techniques to work within the specified project
  • Knowledge of patient-reported outcome measure development using Item Response Theory/Rasch analysis desirable
  • Knowledge of Computerised Adaptive Testing methods desirable
  • Ability to communicate complex information clearly
  • Very good communication skills and confidence to deal with a variety of senior researchers and external project partners at project meetings and dissemination events
  • Ability to assess resource requirements and use resources effectively
  • Understanding of and ability to contribute to broader management/administration processes
  • Ability to work to fixed deadlines
  • Ability to work as a member of a team
  • Excellent writing skills
  • Understanding of and ability to contribute to broader management/administration processes
  • Contribute to the planning and organising of the specified research projects and the future research programme
