Job Details

The SRSG was one of the first RSE Groups set up in the UK. It is the base of operations for the campaign that helped recognise research software engineering both nationally and internationally. As such, the SRSG can offer not just a range of exciting projects within the University of Southampton, but also the perfect opportunity to get involved with the wider RSE community in the UK and around the world. We plan to grow significantly over the next few years to meet the demand for RSE expertise from the University, so we also offer the potential for the new recruit to advance their career as the SRSG grows. You will have the opportunity to work with the Software Sustainability Institute, which is co-located with the SRSG. The Institute is the world-leading authority on research software. It plays a key role in helping the research community recognise the role of software in research and in adopting practices that lead to reliable and reproducible research.

You will initially work on a project with Pamela Ugwudike, based in the Faculty of Social Sciences and Adrianne Chapman in the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences. This project will explore the implications of predictive Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies in the criminal justice system, using an innovative methodology to explore conduits of algorithmic bias and identify possible solutions within a policing context in the UK. The project will investigate a real-world problem (algorithmic decision-making in the justice system) and identify possible solutions from three key disciplinary perspectives: criminology and criminal justice, electronics and computer science, and mathematics. Knowledge of debates surrounding the predictive technologies used in the justice system, including those used by the police is desirable but not essential.

To be successful you must have a PhD or equivalent professional qualifications and experience in scientific research and will require a solid background in development practices and excellent communication skills. A talent for technical problem solving is a must. As you will come into contact with a wide range of technologies and will be given many opportunities to build new skills we don't expect you to be proficient in everything, but it is vital that you enjoy learning new technologies.

We particularly welcome applications from groups under-represented in the RSE community.

You will make a valuable contribution to the SRSG's work, from software development to training and there will be many opportunities to develop skills that will advance your career by learning from leading RSE and to build on skills outside of software development, such as in project management and consultancy.

The position will be at first a 12-month, fixed-term contract, but will be expected to continue for much longer dependent upon funding. The post is based at the University of Southampton in the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences.
