The post-doctoral fellow will be in charge of:
  • i) the study of the limitations of the various single-shot electro-optic detection system based either on home-made optical spectrum analyzers, or on the photonic time-stretch principle.
  • ii) the performance optimization of the existing experimental setups.
  • iii) the implementation of new reconstruction algorithms
  • iv) more in-depth investigations of new detection strategies such as application of time-lens.

It is expected that the data obtained will ultimately make it possible the publication of scientific results in international peer-reviewed journals as well as communication and dissemination of results in international conferences.

The postdoctoral researcher will be part of the accelerator-based coherent sources research group of the DYSCO team (Complex System Dynamics) with the PhLAM laboratory (Physique des Lasers Atomes et Molécules). He/She will work under the supervision of Eléonore ROUSSEL within the framework of the CNRS Momentum METEOR (Time Microscopy of Relativist Objects) project whose aim is to record the temporal profile of relativistic electron bunches circulating in accelerators, particularly in synchrotron lightsources and free-electron lasers. The principle of detection consists in imprint the ultra-fast signal, e.g. the electric field associated to the electron bunch profile, on a probe laser pulse thanks to nonlinear crystals. This project provides alternative ultra-fast optical detection that pave the way for the non-invasive characterization of temporal properties of relativistic electron bunches simultaneously with the generation of synchrotron radiation.

This work is in the framework of the CNRS Momentum METEOR project within the PhLAM laboratory. PhLAM (Physique des Lasers Atomes et Molécules) is a joint research unit under the dual supervision of the University of Lille and the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS). PhLAM presents research activities related to light-matter interaction. Activities are predominantly experimental, but with a very strong coupling with theory. The Complex Systems Dynamics (DYSCO) group of PhLAM is specialized in the complex dynamics of relativistic electron bunches in synchrotron facilities such as storage rings and free-electron lasers and are recognized as international experts in the observation of ultra-fast phenomena.

The candidate will have at his disposal an optical laboratory equipped with femtosecond fiber lasers (Ytterbium and Erbium) as well as a femtosecond titanium-sapphire laser at 800 nm. The project also receives financial support from the Contrat de Projets État-Région (CPER Photonics for Society P4S).

The position is intended for candidate with strong interest for experimentation. Candidates must hold a doctorate in Physics, Engineering or in a related discipline and proven research skills in optics and/or photonics evidenced by at least one publication as the first/joint first or second author relating to these fields. Other essential criteria for this post are a sound knowledge of programming language such as Python and demonstrable experience in designing optical systems. Knowledges in accelerator physics and electron beam dynamics is a valuable benefit, non compulsory, for this post as well as a flexibility and adaptability to experimentation limited in space and time. Candidates must have a very positive attitude to working in a team. Finally, fluency in spoken and written English is a requirement.
