The HPN group is looking for a skilled and enthusiastic researcher with good understanding and technical knowledge on optical networks/and or optical interconnects. The researcher is expected to contribute and lead experimental research with focus on the development and application of advanced optical networking technologies in distributed systems for 5G, beyond 5G, data centre and high-performance computing.

The researcher is expected to produce high quality independent research and support the physical layer activities of ambitious UK-National and European funded projects, such as TOUCAN ( https://www.toucan-network.ac.uk/ ), H2020 Metrohaul ( https://metro-haul.eu/ ) and H2020 5G PICTURE ( https://www.5g-picture-project.eu/index.html ). The researcher may also interact with the projects H2020 UNIQORN ( https://quantum-uniqorn.eu/ ) and UK Quantum Comms Hub ( https://www.quantumcommshub.net/ ) and have the chance to do research on physical layer security for optical networks and quantum technologies.

The HPN group features one of the largest and most illustrious test-bed facilities in Europe, including the public 5GUK testbed ( http://www.bristol.ac.uk/engineering/research/smart/5guk/ ) and the National Dark Fiber Infrastructure ( http://www.ndfis.org/ ). The researcher will be given access to the experimental platforms and will work with the well-established HPN team, including experts in FPGA programming, optical networks control and data plane, software-defined networks , AI for networks, and orchestration to vertically support the research and help shape the future together. The researcher is also expected to collaborate with internal and external research colleagues in industrial and academic laboratories in UK, Europe and beyond.

There is no formal closing date, but the start date for each post is flexible dependent on the circumstances of the successful candidates.
