The School of Earth and Environmental Sciences (SEES)

The School of Earth and Environmental Sciences (SEES) is part of the Faculty of Science at the University of Queensland and is located on the St Lucia campus (Brisbane, Australia) of the University. It has 104 academic staff, and 23 administrative and technical staff. SEES is a vibrant, multidisciplinary School with extensive teaching and research programs covering the fields of Geology, Geography, Environmental Management, Occupational Health and Safety Sciences and Planning. The successful applicant will be based in the McDonald-Madden lab.

Project description

This project aims to develop a spatial model of meat production. The research will lead to recommendations on where and how to produce meat while minimising environment and socio-economic costs (e.g., GHG emissions, biodiversity loss, malnutrition, etc.) and is part of the Future Fellowship project Where's the beef? A systems model for taming a wicked environmental problem. The project is a collaboration with CSIRO, the University of Minnesota, the University of Melbourne and Deakin University.

Preferred educational background
  • Hold a BSc or MSc degree in environmental sciences, agriculture, engineering, mathematics or a related field
  • Knowledge of statistics and programming languages (Python, R or Matlab)
  • Knowledge of geographic information systems, big data analysis or multi-objective optimisation will be considered an advantage

This project is available until December 2019 unless a suitable candidate is found prior.
