MANAGER: INTERNATIONAL PARTNERSHIPS AND PROJECTS (IPP)

JOB PURPOSE:

The purpose of this job is to position the University of Pretoria as a preferred partner for international collaborations and contribute to strengthening the University's research and international profile. The position is central to the internationalisation agenda of UP, and it is aimed at facilitating active participation of UP stakeholders in international collaborations.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The incumbent will be responsible for:
  • Managing international partnerships:
    • Providing support to UP stakeholders pursuing international partnerships;
    • Maintaining active engagement and strengthening relations with key stakeholders outside UP;
  • Managing UP's strategic projects:
    • Managing and co-ordinating of UP's partnerships and participation in strategic partnership programmes such as EU Erasmus Plus programmes;
    • Facilitating awareness campaigns for staff and students on opportunities available for international mobility;
  • Managing UP funded research support programmes:
    • Managing UP funded bursary programmes: Academic Staff Exchange, Post Graduate Study Abroad and the Visiting Professor programmes;
  • Managing the International Partnerships and Projects Unit and staff:
    • Developing the Unit's annual plans, budgets and reports;
    • Overseeing the overall management of staff in the Unit;
  • Fundraising and grant proposal writing:
    • Co-ordinating grant applications for possible funding and managing the full project life cycle for funded projects.


MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
  • A relevant honours degree;
  • Overall five years' experience, with two years in a managerial/supervisory role, that includes;
    • Experience in the operation of an international office at a tertiary institution; OR
    • Experience in international relations at institutions such as an embassy/diplomatic service/government;
    • Experience in fundraising and proposal writing.


REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):
  • Knowledge of:
    • The functioning of an international office;
    • The South African higher education landscape;
    • Global higher education internationalisation trends;
  • Excellent computer skills;
  • Advanced MS Word and Excel knowledge;
  • Ability to perform in a real time environment;
  • Ability to handle conflict;
  • Leadership and negotiation capability;
  • Sensitivity to cultural diversity.


ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES:
  • A master's degree in related areas (International Relations, Political Science, etc);
  • Experience in international co-operation activities at a tertiary institution;
  • Valid driver's license.

The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent's level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED and UMVUZO medical aid schemes and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
