Full time starting salary is normally in the range £30,395 to £39,609. With potential progression once in post to £42,036

Job purpose

To work individually and as part of a wider team on the research project. The post holder will be assist with the survey data collection and analysis, census analysis and assist with interviews and focus groups and contribute to the final report writing. The post holder will be expected to work closely with other colleagues in Birmingham. The post is based at the University of Birmingham and regular attendance is expected (at least two days per week)

Main duties
  • Assisting, where relevant, in working with the principal investigator (PI) to co-ordinate research activities
  • Working on a day-to-day basis with the PI.
  • To manage and analyse survey data as part of the project.
  • To manage data for appropriate sharing and archiving, including taking appropriate care to ensure preservation of confidentiality where required.
  • To present research outputs in academic publications and at seminars and conferences.
  • To disseminate research findings for a range of research users.
  • To deal with any problems that may affect the achievement of research objectives and deadlines.
  • To undertake management and administration arising from research.
  • To undertake qualitative interviews and focus groups where required.
  • To ensure key research contributions are successfully completed within allocated resources and keep progress under regular review.
  • Be an active member of the research team, attending and contributing to relevant team meetings. Collaborate effectively with colleagues.
  • Maintain a high output of academic publications of exceptional quality, in line with the dissemination strategy, to include sole- and co-authored papers in peer-reviewed journals and other agreed outputs.
  • Undertake any other duties required, commensurate with the grade of the post.


Person specification

Essential
  • Degree in economics or health economics, politics, statistics, social policy, sociology, or a related discipline, with demonstrable evidence of training in quantitative methods.
  • A completed PhD in one of the above disciplines, with demonstrable evidence of quantitative and qualitative work (candidates near to completion of their PhDs will also be considered).
  • Substantive expertise in social policy or a related academic area.
  • Experience of research utilising survey methods.
  • Experience with multilevel and longitudinal modelling techniques.
  • Demonstrable quantitative analytical skills.
  • Demonstrable experience of use of appropriate statistical packages (e.g. STATA (preferred), R).
  • Familiarity with contemporary British social policy issues and debates.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as a member of research team.
  • Ability to communicate complex information clearly to different audiences, including non-specialist, non-academic audiences.


Desirable
  • Experience of (co-)writing research reports for funders and other stakeholders, and of contributing to academic papers.
  • Experience of using a range of media to engage with stakeholders and the wider public and to present and disseminate research findings
