DIRECTOR, FINANCE -ACADEMIC PROGRAMMES

Location: Nairobi, Kampala or Dar es Salaam, East Africa

Introduction

Aga Khan University (AKU) is a private, not for profit, university and teaching hospital system that comprises 13 campuses, seven hospitals and 320 outreach medical centres treating 2.2 million patients annually in Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Pakistan and Afghanistan.

The Aga Khan University seeks a strategic and experienced individual to fill the role of Director of Finance for their Academic Programmes in East Africa, based in Nairobi and reporting to the Vice President Finance and Chief Financial Officer of AKU. The Director of Finance Academic Programmes, will be responsible for:

Responsibilities
  • Providing strategic leadership and clear direction to the financial functions of academic programmes in East Africa and work as a key advisor to the entity heads of the University to build influential relationships across the continuum and drive change.
  • Playing a key role in the overall strategic planning and implementation of financial programs and processes that can serve as a model for other countries.
  • Developing financial goals, plans and budgets in consultation with entity heads; strengthening and administering financial systems and controls encompassing all University assets in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania.
  • Working closely with the CFO of Aga Khan University Hospital, Nairobi and other colleagues in Uganda, Tanzania and Pakistan.

Requirements
  • Master's degree in business or a finance related field, accounting and appropriate certificates such as Certified Chartered Accountant - Member of the ACCA or CPA is a requirement.
  • 10 years of progressive experience in financial management within a health services environment is essential, whilst exposure to an academic institution is advantageous;
  • Substantial experience in establishing and managing a complex financial organization and implementing effective financial controls and reporting systems is necessary.
  • The ideal candidate will also be familiar with the international accounting standards and their application; be knowledgeable in accounting (preferably ERP) and payroll systems, proficient in the use of MS Office applications and experienced in managing research funds and grants.
