Position Purpose

The Clinical Laboratory Scientist Senior will provide the technical supervision of the Clinical Laboratory in the absence of the Clinical Lab Supervisor and/or current management on site. The Clinical Lab Scientist Senior, will lead and direct operations, as the point person for the entire Clinical laboratory who will accept responsibility for all departments, and use the appropriate resources to escalate and monitor a safe working environment for patients and staff. The support provided by this position is that of "general supervisor" as defined by Medicare under the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act of 1988 (42CFR493.1461 & 1463). The CLS - Senior is responsible for ensuring accurate results are reported to the appropriate hospital staff and physicians in a timely, courteous and professional manner.

• Provide technical training to staff and students
• Serve as a preceptor/mentor for new employees in the lab
• Assure CAP readiness and assist with accreditation process
• Organize and facilitate with HIS and LIS downtime procedures including auto-faxing and password reset
• Facilitate with all Codes, especially Code Triage and communicates issues to all lab departments
• Participate in Laboratory committees and Transformational Health Care Opportunities.
• Facilitate with Sick Call coverage
• Initiate equipment service calls and can escalate appropriately

Nature and Scope

Renown Health Laboratory is a 24-hour/7-days a week operation, providing laboratory services to both inpatient and outpatients of all ages.

The incumbent must demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide quality and timely laboratory tests on inpatients and outpatients through organization of workload, completion of quality control procedures, proper specimen identification, and ensuring proper instrument/equipment operational status. Test results must be clearly reported to nursing and/or medical staff through direct communication or result entry by computer.

The incumbent must consider the age of the patient when performing testing and releasing results. Must be able to communicate with a diverse patient population and their family when performing special procedures. Behavior promoting positive customer service is expected at all times.

The Clinical Laboratory Scientist-Senior reports results in the Laboratory Information System. Communicating delays in patients care and assisting with technical questions for clinical lab assistants, physicians and nurses is expected.

The incumbent must be knowledgeable of and observe all safety requirements in a laboratory and hospital setting. Comprehensive knowledge must be maintained for all procedures that are required to be performed. Competency in work related skills must be demonstrated annually, or with new testing

This position does provide patient care. This position may require driving to other Renown patient testing centers as assigned by the Clinical Laboratory Supervisor.

Minimum Qualifications
Requirements - Required and/or Preferred




Must have working-level knowledge of the English language, including reading, writing and speaking English. Appropriate education to obtain and maintain Clinical Laboratory Technologist State of Nevada based on licensure criteria.


Three years of experience as a nationally certified Clinical Laboratory Technologist (Medical Technologist) preferred.


A current State of Nevada Clinical Laboratory Technologist license is preferred and the ability to obtain a State of Nevada General Supervisor license within 7 months is required. Failure to receive General Supervisor licensure will result in demotion to Clinical Laboratory Scientist.


Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) (ASCP) preferred

Computer / Typing:

Must possess, or be able to obtain within 90 days, the computer skills necessary to complete online learning requirements for job-specific competencies, access online forms and policies, complete online benefits enrollment, etc. Knowledge of Laboratory Information Systems.
