ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR, VETERINARY RESOURCES/INSTITUTE VETERINARIAN

Under new leadership, Southwest National Primate Research Center and Texas Biomedical Research Institute located in San Antonio, Texas are seeking an Associate Director, Veterinary Resources/Institute Veterinarian to be responsible for ensuring appropriate veterinary care and regulatory compliance consistent with Standard Operating Procedures and in accordance with the Animal Welfare Act and The Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals. The successful candidate will be responsible for overseeing and effectively leading the veterinarian staff ensuring optimum animal care and superior staff performance.  Duties include managerial oversight of animal resources maintained by the SNPRC.  Establishing and maintaining collaborative relationships while providing and ensuring veterinary care and regulatory compliance.  Ensuring full integration of veterinarian personnel at all levels to ensure optimum efficiency in processes and procedures.  Empowering colleagues to take responsibility for their job tasks and holding individuals accountable for fulfillment of job duties.  Fostering a spirit of teamwork and unity among veterinarians that allows for open dialogue and cohesiveness to resolve issues.  Creating a workplace culture that is consistent with the core values, mission and vision of the Institute.  Providing effective performance feedback through recognition and coaching techniques.  Maintaining transparent communication and ensuring that pertinent information is appropriately communicated at all levels.  Working closely with the SNPRC Director and the existing Associate Director of the Research Resources in preparing base grant renewal applications and progress reports, as well as grant applications for construction, renovation, and primate resource development.  Working with the Institutional Official and IACUC to ensure animal welfare at Texas Biomedical Research Institute.  This includes but is not limited to implementation of the preventative health program, disease surveillance and prevention, administering analgesics and anesthetics, participating in the DEA controlled substance program, surgical and post-surgical care of research animals, diagnosis and treatments of diseases.  (https://www.snprc.org).

Requirements for this position are: Candidates must possess a D.V.M. /V.M.D. degree from AVMA accredited university, valid license to practice in the United States and USDA accreditation or be able to become USDA accredited. Requires ten or more years of primate clinical medicine experience. A minimum of five years of management experience required.  Preferred: Formal training and board certification in laboratory animal medicine. Preferred candidate is licensed in the state of Texas and able to obtain a DEA license. Proficient computer skills (Microsoft, Excel), technical writing skills, knowledge of review and development of study protocols, knowledge of regulatory requirements.

This is a full-time salaried (exempt) position. Texas Biomed business hours are Mondays through Fridays 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Texas Biomed is committed to a drug-free workplace.  Pre-employment drug screen is required.
