The Laboratory of Genetics in Aquaculture and Conservation (LaGeAC), from the São Paulo State University - UNESP's Aquaculture Center located in Jaboticabal, Brazil, has an open opportunity for Technical Training (Level III) with Scholarship funded by the São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP). The selected candidate will work within the Project Low-cost genome-wide association study and genomic predictions for resistance to Aeromonas hydrophila in pacu (Piaractus mesopotamicus) (grant number 2018 / 08416-5), stablished through the 2018 International Call between FAPESP and CONICYT, the Chilean government ST&I agency. Professor Dr. Diogo Teruo Hashimoto is project supervisor.

Selecting superior genotypes for disease resistance is a key approach to maximizing production in the context of environmental sustainability and food safety. The objectives of this project are: i) to perform a genome-wide association study for Aeromonas hydrophila resistance in pacu and ii) to evaluate genomic prediction strategies using low cost genotyping-sequencing (GBS), low density of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and genotype imputation.

Tasks:
  • Preparation of solutions;
  • Identification of samples and storage;
  • Routine, maintenance and cleaning of the work area;
  • Preparation of Standard Operating Procedure;
  • Conducting experiments;
  • DNA and RNA extraction;
  • Agarose gel electrophoresis;
  • DNA and RNA quantification;
  • Statistical analysis;
  • Genomic analysis with bioinformatics programs;
  • Collaboration with other multi-disciplinary lab teams.

* Some other task associated with the project may be required from time to time.

Qualifications:
  • Graduation completed or near to complete;
  • Basic knowledge in molecular genetics;
  • Knowledge in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and PowerPoint);
  • Ability to work as part of a team;
  • Commitment, organization, accuracy and maintenance of data records;
  • Previous experience in research laboratory or routine;
  • Experience with preparing solutions.

The scholarship will be applied in the period of 12 months, renewable for up to 12 months, depending on the performance of the candidate, which will be evaluated according to FAPESP rules. The selected candidate will receive FAPESP Technical Training Grant III (TT-3), in the amount of R$ 1,228.40 per month.
