Job Details

We are looking for a Research Software Engineer (RSE) interested in joining a UK-wide collaborative project led from Bristol, developing software for collecting and coding social media interactions in UK longitudinal cohorts with tens of thousands of participants. This information will be used to improve our understanding of the development of both good and poor mental health. In the longer term the post holder will work on a variety of software projects drawn from across the University and the Alan Turing Institute network and will lead data science tools training across the University.

The RSE will develop software in partnership with researchers, ensuring sufficient documentation, testing and technology transfer techniques are used to enable software to be sustainably developed in future projects, or deployed at scale in production research environments. The RSE will seek to maximise productivity by collaborating with researchers through consultation, advocacy, training and hands-on programming work.

The applicant will need expert knowledge of computer programming and hardware; experience of using key software development tools, such as Python, R and version control systems (git); they will need knowledge of data analysis platforms and technologies, and they will also need to be adaptable and have excellent communication skills.

The position is available from 1 October 2019 for 1 year on the first instance, however, the expectation is that the post will move to other Turing funded projects.

We appreciate and value difference, seeking to attract, develop and retain a diverse mix of talented people that will contribute to the overall success of Bristol.

The closing date for applications is 11 September 2019 with interviews held as soon as possible after.

We welcome applications from all members of our community and are particularly encouraging those from diverse groups, such as members of the LGBT+ and BAME communities, to join us.
