The Department of Internal Medicine, Max Rady College of Medicine, Rady Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Manitoba, and Shared Health Manitoba is seeking a clinician-investigator or clinician-scientist as Section Head of Hepatology.  The successful candidate will also be named to the Morberg Family Chair in Hepatology.  This endowed chair is designed to provide salary and/or operating funds for a clinician-scientist or clinician-investigator pursuing investigator driven, independent research in Hepatology.

The Section of Hepatology is one of 17 academic sections in the Department of Internal Medicine providing patient care, undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing education, and has an active clinical and lab-based research program.  The section’s 8 faculty members actively collaborate with scientists from other departments and institutions across Canada and globally, including the National Microbiology Laboratory/Public Health Agency of Canada based in Winnipeg.

The successful applicant, based at Health Sciences Centre, will lead a group of academic hepatologists in a busy and expanding liver disease program and report to the Department Head of Internal Medicine.  The successful candidate will be a clinician-investigator or clinician-scientist with a track record in hepatobiliary research, and will have a strong record of publications in high impact journals and ongoing peer-reviewed research funding from recognized granting agencies.  The applicant will have demonstrated a high capacity to successfully interact and collaborate with other clinical and basic scientists within their Department, Faculty, University, nationally and/or internationally.  They will build, coordinate, and enhance our academic and clinical program of Hepatology.  Interests in furthering undergraduate, postgraduate, and continuing medical education in Hepatology are required.

The candidate is expected to have a strong record of mentoring young clinicians and basic scientists, as well as training postdoctoral fellows, graduate students, and research associates.  They will have proven leadership abilities and administrative skills.

This is a geographical, full-time, contingent position, with a start date negotiable based on the successful candidate’s availability, for a term of 5 years, renewable upon favourable review.  Salary and rank will be dependent upon qualifications and experience.

Candidates must demonstrate broad experience in clinical management of liver diseases (including pre- and post-transplant), and must be eligible for registration with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Manitoba.  The successful applicant must have an MD degree or both MD and PhD degrees.   Candidates must have Senior Specialty qualifications with Internal Medicine and Hepatology in the country of current practice.
