Junior Lecturer Positions (Fixed-term Full-time Appointment)

(Ref. ING00/231/0819)

The Faculty of Engineering at Stellenbosch University is one of the leading engineering faculties in the country and recognised internationally for the quality of our graduates and research outputs. A limited number of positions as Junior Lecturer are available in the following departments:
  • Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering
  • Department of Industrial Engineering
  • Department of Mechanical and Mechatronic Engineering
  • Department of Process Engineering

In line with the University and the Faculty employment equity plan, these positions are aimed at the development of a cadre of young black academics. Only South African citizens from the designated groups will be considered for appointment, with preference to black Africans. Candidates without PhDs in Engineering will be afforded the opportunity to study part-time towards a doctoral degree in engineering and position themselves for an academic career.

This is a five-year contract appointment with the possibility to extend the appointment after five years. It is expected of the candidates who are appointed and who do not have a PhD qualification, to enrol for PhD studies within six months after appointment and to then obtain the degree in a reasonable amount of time, but not taking longer than five years.

Duties:
  • Teaching and administration of general undergraduate engineering modules;
  • Supervising final year engineering projects;
  • Performing basic and/or applied research focused in research areas relevant to the department where the appointment will be made;
  • Collaborating with existing research groups within the department;
  • Performing support, administrative and representative roles in the department.

Job requirements:
  • An applicable four-year bachelor's degree (such as BEng or BScEng) in Engineering, recognised by the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) to qualify for registration as a Professional Engineer;
  • An appropriate master's degree (typically MEng or MScEng) from, or enrolled for a PhD in Engineering, at a recognised academic university;
  • A strong academic track-record;
  • The ability and desire to complete a PhD in Engineering on a part-time basis within the five-year contract period;
  • The ability to communicate clearly in at least English and to teach courses and modules as part of the typical undergraduate engineering programme;
  • Good interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively in teams.

Recommendation:
  • Appropriate industry experience;
  • An NRF rating as a young researcher;
  • Registration as a Professional Engineer;
  • Previous tertiary teaching experience, both at undergraduate and/or postgraduate level;
  • Ability to function in a multidisciplinary environment.

The University will consider all applications in terms of its Employment Equity Plan, which acknowledges the need to diversify the demographic composition of the staff corps, especially with regard to the appointment of suitable candidates from the designated groups.

The University reserves the right not to make an appointment.

Your application, comprising a comprehensive curriculum vitae (including the names and e-mail address of at least three referees), must reach the University before or on the closing date of the advertised post.

Candidates may be subjected to appropriate psychometric testing and other selection instruments.

The University reserves the right to investigate qualifications and conduct background checks on all candidates.

Should no feedback be received from the University within six weeks of the closing date, kindly accept that your application did not succeed.
