Full time starting salary is normally in the range £30,395 to £39,609. With potential progression once in post to £42,036 a year.

Background

Professor Colin Watts and Dr Chiara Bardella are seeking a highly motivated individual for a postdoctoral position to work within a brain cancer research programme that seeks to understand the mechanisms that underpin the functional evolution of brain cancer and the impact of therapy.

Specifically, the post holder will investigate the impact of clonal diversity of cancer evolution and the emergence of treatment resistant disease in the context of IDH mutation and/or metabolic stress.

With a PhD in a relevant subject area and laboratory experience in cancer biology, you are expected to have practical experience in culturing primary cells, phenotyping, molecular cloning and functional assays. Proven experience in the isolation and enrichment of cancer cell subsets including immune cells and tumour-associated stroma from fresh tumour tissue will be required together with experience using & working with animal models of cancer in vivo.

Techniques involved
  • Isolation, enrichment and culturing of cancer cell subsets and tumour associated stroma from fresh tumour specimens.
  • Phenotypic and functional characterisation of tumour clones, infiltrating lymphocytic and myeloid cells and stromal cells from fresh tumour specimens
  • Flow cytometry and cell sorting
  • Genome editing using CRISPER libraries
  • Single cell functional assays
  • PCR techniques including RT-qPCR and endpoint PCR.
  • Molecular cloning including transfection/transduction of cell lines and primary immune cells
  • Generating GEMM & PDX models of brain cancer using syngeneic and/or immunocompromised animals

Main Duties/Responsibilities
  • To plan and develop research objectives and proposals for own or joint research, with assistance of a mentor if required
  • Contribute to writing bids for research funding
  • Analyse and interpret the results of own research and generate original ideas based on outcomes.
  • Apply knowledge in a way which develops new intellectual understanding
  • Design a successful programme of investigation, managing individual components of the study from the start of the project to dissemination of research findings for publication, research seminars etc within set timeframes.
  • Make and contribute to decisions on day to day matters that affect their own work and that of the team
  • Keep abreast of the literature and maintain a good working knowledge of the background and current developments in the field of the project.
  • Attend research seminars, meetings and conferences and undertake training courses where required.
  • Build internal contacts and participate in internal networks for the exchange of information and for future collaboration.
  • Be aware of the risks in the work environment and contribute to COSSH and other regulatory assessments when appropriate
  • Apply knowledge in a way which develops new intellectual understanding
  • Supervise students on research related work and provide guidance to PhD students where appropriate to the discipline
  • Contribute to developing new models, techniques and methods
  • Undertake management/administration arising from research
  • Contribute to Institute research-related activities and research-related administration
  • Contribute to enterprise, business development and/or public engagement activities of manifest benefit to the College and the University, often under supervision of a project leader
  • Collect research data; this may be through a variety of research methods, such as scientific experimentation, literature reviews, and research interviews.
  • Present research results within the research group, wider University and conference presentations at local and national level (where appropriate). Also, through peer reviewed journal publication including drafting academic publications or parts thereof.
  • Provide guidance, as required, to support staff and any students who may be assisting with the research
  • Deal with problems that may affect the achievement of research objectives and deadline

Person Specification
  • First degree in area of specialism and normally, a higher degree relevant to research area or equivalent qualifications or experience
  • High level analytical capability
  • Ability to communicate complex information clearly
  • Fluency in relevant models, techniques or methods and ability to contribute to developing new ones
  • Ability to assess resource requirements and use resources effectively
  • Understanding of and ability to contribute to broader management/administration processes
  • Knowledge of the protected characteristics of the Equality Act 2010, and how to actively ensure in day to day activity in own area that those with protected characteristics are treated equally and fairly.
