Background

The Business and Labour Economics Group in the Birmingham Business School is seeking to appoint a Research Fellow to work on the ESRC funded research project ' Changing Lanes? Brexit and UK Automotive: Impacts and implications for corporate strategies and industrial policy .'

Activities include original research and fieldwork, participating in the day-to-day activities of the project, including organising events and dissemination/impact, and producing both sole-authored and co-authored publications including monographs and journal articles.

The successful candidate will have completed (or be close to completing - or have equivalent experience to - a doctorate in a relevant social science (Economics; Business and Management Studies; Political Science or European Studies), and will have relevant research experience, preferably relating to Brexit, manufacturing, automotive and industrial policy.

Based in Birmingham, the post will require travel locally, nationally and overseas.

Summary of Role

• Undertake original research concerning the impact of Brexit on the UK automotive industry, on corporate strategies, and policy responses at a national and local level.
• Participate in qualitative data collection and analysis of collected data, using both qualitative and quantitative methods;
• Publish and assist publication of the academic results of the project in appropriate scholarly journals and presses and write up project reports;
• Attend conferences and workshops in order to disseminate and develop the project's research;
• Liaise with Professor Bailey to make sure that the websites and other project documentation are up to date and reflect the developments of the project and that research output is widely disseminated;
• Support and assist Professor Bailey in a range of administrative functions to ensure the smooth functioning of the project.

Main Duties/Responsibilities

• Develop research objectives and proposals for own or joint research, with assistance of a mentor if required
• Contribute to writing bids for research funding
• Analyse and interpret data
• Apply knowledge in a way which develops new intellectual understanding
• Disseminate research findings for publication, research seminars etc.
• Supervise students on research related work and provide guidance on PhD students where appropriate to the discipline
• Contribute to developing new models, techniques and methods
• Undertake management/administration arising from research
• Contribute to Departmental/School research-related activities and research related administration
• Contribute to enterprise, business development and/or public engagement activities of manifest benefit to the College and the University, often under supervision of a project leader
• Collect research data; this may be through a variety of research methods, such as scientific experimentation, literature reviews, and research interviews*
• Present research outputs, including drafting academic publications or parts thereof, for example at seminars and as posters*
• Provide guidance, as required, to support staff and any students who may be assisting with the research*
• Deal with the problems that may affect the achievement of research objectives and deadlines*

Person Specification

Essential

• First degree in area of specialism and normally, a higher degree relevant to research area or equivalent qualifications.
• A doctorate (completed or close to completion before the date of appointment) in a relevant social science subject ((Economics; Business and Management Studies; Political Science or European Studies),
• Experience in quantitative research and qualitative research design, data collection and data analysis.
• Relevant research experience, preferably relating to Brexit, manufacturing and industrial policy.
• A strong research and publication record, preferably using both quantitative and qualitative research skills;
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to liaise with a range of stakeholders.

Desirable

• Experience of undertaking independent fieldwork, preferably with businesses, policy makers and other organisations.
