Grade Clinical professorial with an honorary consultant contract

Part time working 0.50 FTE

JOB PURPOSE

To increase dermatology capacity within secondary care sector to ensure that patients are able to access services within agreed waiting time targets.

To support the development of an integrated service with Primary Care to enable appropriate patients to be managed within the community setting.

MAIN DUTIES
  1. To increase dermatology capacity in primary and secondary care;
  2. To provide an educational role for undergraduate and postgraduates;
  3. To work collaboratively with colleagues in primary care
  4. To support protocol development to assist GPs in the referral and management of dermatology patients in the community;
  5. To oversee joint clinical governance arrangements for dermatology;
  6. To enhance the specialist nature of dermatology services;
  7. To provide continued clinical responsibility for the patients under his/her care in conjunction with the acute medical physicians;
  8. To undertake dermatology and specialist outpatient clinics in accordance with the agreed job plan;
  9. Provide professional supervision, direction and training to the junior medical staff;
  10. Participate in medical audit and particular reference to dermatology;
  11. To attend meetings of the Directorate of Dermatology;
  12. To take part in agreed provision of cover for consultant colleagues during leave;
  13. The appointee will be managerially, but not clinically, accountable to the Clinical Director for Dermatology;
  14. The postholder will be expected to contribute to the rota for urgent dermatology referrals from local GPs and hospital consultants. You may also be required to participate in a pan Birmingham out of hours on call rota.


Continuing Professional Education

The Trust Supports the requirements for continuing Medical Education as laid down by the Royal College of Physicians and is committed to providing time and financial support for these activities.

Infection Control

All post holders have a personal obligation to act to reduce healthcare-associated infections (HCAIs). They must attend mandatory training in Infection Control and be compliant with all measures required by the Trust to reduce HCAIs. All post holders must comply with Trust infection screening and immunisation policies as well as be familiar with the Trust's Infection Control Policies, including those that apply to their duties, such as Hand Decontamination Policy, Personal Protective Equipment Policy, safe procedures for using aseptic techniques and safe disposal of sharps.

Risk Management

All post holders have a responsibility to report risks such as clinical and non-clinical accidents or incidents promptly. They are expected to be familiar with the Trust's use of risk assessments to predict and control risk, as well as the incident reporting system for learning from mistakes and near misses in order to improve services. Post holders must also attend training identified by their manager, or stated by the Trust to be mandatory.

Safeguarding children and vulnerable adults

Post holders have a general responsibility for safeguarding children and vulnerable adults in the course of their daily duties and for ensuring that they are aware of the specific duties relating to their role.

Outline Job Plan

The exact work pattern will be subject to further discussion and agreement with the other consultants in the directorate and may be amended in light of the changing needs of the clinical service and the organisation. An initial job plan will be agreed with the Clinical Director at the time of appointment and will be subject to annual review. This post is half-time at the level of Clinical Lecturer and Honorary Consultant Dermatologist, as a permanent position, with clinical commitments in the Deprt. Of Dermatology, Solihull Hospital, University Hospitals Birmingham. It is expected that the other half of the week the appointee will engage in research/academic activity in pursuance of a higher degree, funding for which must be sought separately.

Person Specification
  • Eligibility to be entered on the Specialist Register in Dermatology or be within 6 months of a CCT in Dermatology
  • MRCP or Equivalent
  • Higher Degree
  • Relevant Dermatology experience including experience of research and genodermatoses, especially epidermolysis bullosa. Intention to pursue a higher degree - MD/PhD
  • Awareness of the differing needs of a diverse population in relation to ethnicity
  • Teaching/Training skills
  • Effective Communication Skills
  • Acceptable health record over previous 2 years (in accordance with standards defined in the Trust's policy)
  • Ability to both lead and work as part of a multi-disciplinary team
