Job Details

Research Associate/Senior Research Associate in Greenhouse Gas

You will take a leading role in the NERC-funded Detection and Attribution of Regional greenhouse gas Emissions in the UK (DARE-UK) and several other NERC funded projects related to measurement and modelling of greenhouse gases. This project has the aim of developing pioneering greenhouse gas (GHG) measurement and modeling techniques, to constrain UK emissions at higher accuracy and resolution that ever before using GHG measurements from a network of sampling sites across the UK and Ireland. Based in the Atmospheric Chemistry Research Group (ACRG) at the University of Bristol, you will work closely with Prof Simon O'Doherty, Dr Matt Rigby, Dr Anita Ganesan and Prof Alistair Manning from the UK Met Office to deliver UK 14CO2 and Radon measurements from selected UK networks sites and enhanced emissions estimates of a wide range of GHGs. The role represents a unique opportunity for an ambitious young researcher to make a significant impact on this rapidly evolving field.

Critical skills and experience:
  • A PhD in a physical science
  • Experience in atmospheric instrumental design and construction
  • Experience in remote fieldwork
  • Experience in experimental and theoretical science, including a good background in computing (experience with Python is essential)
  • A good understanding of statistics and Bayesian methods
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision, and to plan and organise your own time to achieve a high level of productivity

You will have excellent opportunities to develop supervisory, written, teaching and leadership skills and therefore this post provides ideal training for a career in industry or academia. Duties may also include helping with the training and supervision of PhD and final year project students.

Enquires to: Dr Matt Rigby ( matt.rigby@bristol.ac.uk ), and Prof Simon O'Doherty ( s.odoherty@bristol.ac.uk ).

We welcome applications from all members of our community and are particularly encouraging those from diverse groups, such as members of the LGBT+ and BAME communities, to join us.
