Job Details

Institute for Technological Research - IPT, a public research institute linked to the Secretariat for Economic Development, Science, Technology and Innovation of the State of São Paulo, Brazil, is seeking a highly qualified, self-motivated postdoctoral researcher to join its Micromanufacturing Laboratory (LMI) research group to work on analysis and validation of simulation tools applied to microfabrication processes optimization for MEMS development.

IPT is one of Brazil's largest research institutes, with state-of-the-art laboratories and a highly qualified team of researchers and technicians working basically in four major areas: i) innovation, ii)R&D, iii) technological services and metrological support, and iv) information and education in technology.

Job Requirements and Key Responsibilities:

The selected candidate should have knowledge in mathematical modeling and simulation techniques such as finite element analysis, as well as extensive hands-on experience in device microfabrication and characterization. Candidates who do not have any research experience in thin film fabrication techniques and plasma assisted processes will not be considered. Research experience of 1 to 3 years after PhD is desirable.

Key roles include but are not limited to:
  • Develop and manage aspects of physical-chemical simulations focused on the optimization of microfabrication processes applied to sensors, actuators and MEMS device development;
  • Develop and manage the aspects of process development for fabrication of sensors, actuators and MEMS devices that involves Photolithography, Plasma processing, Etch & Dry Strip, Thin films (PVD, PECVD), CMP& Wafer Bonding, Clean & Wet Processes, by applying (and, if necessary, specifying) equipment operational conditions, process protocols, process route and materials, as well as rework routes;
  • Develop procedures for device characterization, applying tools such as MEV, EDS and AFM;
  • Propose, participate and lead multidisciplinary research projects;
  • Manage the reporting and documentation associated with the projects;
  • Help the group leader to supervise junior researchers in the group.

What We Offer:

Fellowship from FAPESP in the amount of R$ 7,373.10 monthly, with two years of duration, and a research contingency fund, equivalent to 15% of the annual value of the fellowship which should be spent in items directly related to the research activity.. As a fringe benefit IPT offers lunch to their grantees.

Researchers will also benefit of other lab facilities available at IPT (read more at http://www.ipt.br/en/fields_of_activity ).

International and competitive environment in contact with leading edge technology demands from various industrial sectors.

Required Skills and Experience:
  • Ph.D. degree in, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics, or related field;
  • Modeling and numerical simulation of MEMS devices & processes;
  • 1-3 years of demonstrated experience in programming and implementation of numerical analysis algorithms;
  • Experiences in thin film fabrication and processes assisted by plasma are a must;
  • Clean room microfabrication experience is a plus;
  • Thorough understanding of semiconductor process technology;
  • Thorough understanding of fundamental principles of MEMS actuation and sensing;
  • Candidate should be familiar with materials characterization techniques such as SEM, EDS, AFM, Ellipsometry, and Thin Film Stress measurements;
  • Demonstrated problem solving skills;
  • Previous experience in project management is an advantage.

Personal Skills:
  • Strong motivation to work both independently and as part of a team in an interdisciplinary environment, with the ability to pay close attention to detail and to meet deadlines;
  • Good communication skills and team spirit;
  • Proactive;
