Job Details

The post-doc will be involved:
  • Manufacture of the device ijn clean-room
  • Study of optomechanical effects
  • Microwave characterization

The role of the post-doc will be to evaluate the potential of ultra-stable compact microwave clocks for time-frequency metrology.

One of the main issues is the stability of the oscillator output, as indicated by its phase noise over short periods. The stabilization can be achieved by implementing integrated optoelectronic loops, using either an optical control or an acoustic control according to different locking schemes.

Recent advances in nanophotonics have enabled the co-design of mechanical and optical resonances in the same device, paving the way for nanoscale optomechanical experiments. A notable contribution that has emerged from this domain is the manifestation of a parametric instability, resulting in mechanical amplification and consequently an oscillation of the purely optical controlled mechanical mode. This ability to perform a self-sustaining oscillation without the need for electronic feedback makes optomechanical oscillators attractive for on-chip applications such as microwave clocks, in which directed light energy from a laser is available to power the oscillation.

The photonic architecture will rely on a high quality integrated optomechanical resonator, namely a cavity with photonic crystal defects, in order to achieve a very stable oscillation in the GHz range, where the lack of Miniaturized and good quality sources are a serious problem. Thanks to the sharp reduction of nanoscale oscillator dimensions, the resonator will support the highly light-coupled mechanical modes up to 3-5 GHz, directly at the operating frequency of interest for microwave oscillators optoelectronic and metrology applications.
