Job Purpose

The NIHR Applied Research Centre West Midlands (ARC WM) is a five-year initiative commencing in October 2019 with a mission to create lasting and effective collaborations across health and social care organisations, universities (Birmingham, Keele, Warwick) and local authorities to improve the services we can deliver for patient benefit.

The ARC is funded through a £9million investment from the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) together with a further £4million per year of co-funding provided by collaborative partners. The idea behind the ARC is to conduct prospective evaluations of service delivery interventions put in place by the health and social services collaborators who have provided the co-funding.

ARC West Midlands focuses on four crucial areas of health to include the following service themes:

• Theme 1 - Long Term Conditions
• Theme 2 - Acute Care Interfaces
• Theme 3 - Integrated Care in Youth Mental Health
• Theme 4 - Maternity

The increasing demand for Social Care and the vital role of Public Health will also be key to many of the ARC's projects as care providers search for the best and most effective ways to maintain an independent and healthy population.

All this work is supported by new scientific ways to measure the impact of changes and to make sure the best care is spread so that it can be delivered everywhere.

Cross-cutting support topics include:

• Theme 5 - Organisational Science
• Theme 6 - Research Methodology, Informatics and Rapid Response

In five years, the outcome should be better health, a better prospect of staying healthy, and a service in which every pound of the public's contribution goes on services that use the best evidence of what works. The results we obtain will be shared around the world, so that people everywhere can learn from our achievements.

We are seeking a medical statistician to both support the four service themes in the application of health science research and to contribute to the development of research methodology appropriate to the design and evaluation of health science research.
