The Graduate School of Technology Management (GSTM) is the first graduate school of its kind in South Africa and also the largest in Africa. The GSTM provides management skills and knowledge training to practising engineers and scientists. The GSTM offers internationally recognised postgraduate programmes at honours, masters and doctoral level in Technology and Innovation Management, Engineering Management and Project Management. Research is a high priority for the GSTM.

Successful candidates should be committed to excellence in research and postgraduate teaching in either of the fields of:
  • Technology Management (e.g. identification, strategic planning (incl. road-mapping) assessment/ audit, acquisition and transfer of technologies)

OR
  • System Engineering (e.g. phases of the SE process, integrate down-stream implications, integration of SE management with project - and technology management, Process Modeling (e.g. IDEF 0), appreciation/capability of modeling of systems in the era of 4IR)

OR
  • Finance and Cost Management (e.g. financial modelling including project financial calculations, bottom-up and top-down cost estimation, cost control methods and practices, cost - benefit analysis, cost reporting, etc.)


RESPONSIBILITIES:

It will be expected of the successful candidate to:
  • Teach postgraduate modules in the focus areas of GSTM;
  • Supervise postgraduate Masters and PhD students;
  • Conduct research in a highly productive manner as a member of a research group in the School and publish consistently in leading accredited journals;
  • Raise and manage additional funding from national and international funding agencies and industry to support the activities of the relevant research group;
  • Expand existing research programmes or initiate new research programmes;
  • Perform assigned departmental duties (e.g. of an administrative nature).


MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
  • A BEng degree from a university of which the undergraduate programme is recognised by the Washington accord or is recognised by ECSA to be equivalent;
  • A Masters' degree in Engineering that follows on the previous qualification;
  • A PhD degree in Engineering that follows on the previous qualification;
  • Applicants with a doctoral degree in the Natural Sciences will be considered in cases where the applicant's research and/or industry experience relates closely to the teaching and research focus areas of the GSTM;
  • A record of previous postgraduate teaching experience, and supervision of Masters or PhD students;
  • The ability to effectively teach large postgraduate classes;
  • A well-established and internationally recognised record of research supported by publications in high quality peer reviewed journals. Research field must be aligned to one of the research focus areas of the GSTM;
  • At least eight years' experience at a tertiary academic institution or industry related experience;
  • An appropriate NRF research rating or currently be under evaluation with at least a C recommendation from his or her university.


ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES:
  • Evidence of teaching excellence to large postgraduate classes;
  • Preference will be given to candidates who have teaching and research expertise that complement the Department's research focus areas;
  • Related industry work or consulting experience;
  • Candidates must be registered or registerable as Professional Engineer with ECSA


The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent's level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED medical aid scheme and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
