Applications are invited for an insect support technician in the School of Biological Sciences. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to multidisciplinary research and teaching.
  • Carry out day-to-day production and maintenance of insects and insect diet to a standard that meets customers' requirements using submitted protocols. Highlight problems promptly.
  • Effectively plan and coordinate the work programme within Insect research as outlined by key insect researchers and the technical manager.
  • Develop technical entomological knowledge and skills through experience of a wide range of production techniques, training courses and attendance at team meetings.
  • Take responsibility for designated pieces of equipment, tasks and/or working areas on behalf of the research groups.
  • Identify areas for improvements in efficiency and contribute to problem solving in consultation with research staff and technical manager.
  • Contribute to safety performance by maintaining a clean and safe personal working environment. Comply with all safety procedures and HSE regulations.
  • Ensure compliance by self and others with appropriate organisations such as DEFRA, and HSE regulations on containment and use of genetically modified organisms and licensed pests in controlled environment rooms.


The role is varied and an ability to work independently and proactively is desired. The successful candidate will have experience of working in laboratories handling plants and insects.

The role will be full time (35 hours per week). The post is available for 8 months in the first instance or as a secondment.
