School of Social Science

With over 45 academic staff and around 800 equivalent full-time students including 100 higher degree students, the School is one of the most prestigious of its type in Australia. It is a research-intensive School comprising the disciplines of anthropology, archaeology, criminology and sociology. At the undergraduate level, the School manages the Bachelor of Social Science and the Bachelor of Criminology and Criminal Justice (Honours), and also offers majors in each discipline within the Bachelor of Arts, along with an archaeological science major in the Bachelor of Science. The School manages postgraduate coursework programs in Development Practice, Community Development, Museum Studies, and Heritage Management.

The archaeology discipline trains students in anthropological archaeology with an emphasis on archaeological science, cultural heritage management, and historical archaeology. The School has world-class facilities with its archaeological laboratories, the Archaeology Teaching & Research Centre (ATARC) - an outdoor site for practical teaching and experimental archaeology, and the Anthropology Museum.

About This Opportunity

The purpose of this role is to engage, as a lecturer, in the undergraduate and postgraduate teaching of archaeology and archaeological science.

This position is located at our picturesque St Lucia campus , renowned as one of Australia's most attractive university campuses, and located just 7km from Brisbane's city centre. Our Ideal Candidate

The School of Social Science is seeking to appoint a continuing teaching-focused Lecturer in Archaeology, to commence teaching in Semester 1 2020. The role involves teaching undergraduate and postgraduate courses in archaeology and archaeological science, supervising honours and postgraduate student theses, contribute to developing the archaeology discipline and the continued teaching excellence of the School's scholarly community, and perform administrative and service duties associated with the School, including its Archaeology Laboratory and ATARC (Archaeology Teaching and Research Centre).

Applicants must have a PhD in archaeology or equivalent PhD in anthropology. They must demonstrate technical speciality in one or more sub-disciplines of archaeological science, and possess a demonstrated ability in managing laboratory facilities. The successful candidate will have a demonstrated capacity for innovative teaching and course design, with experience in teaching courses in archaeology across a number of areas. The successful applicant will demonstrate the ability to supervise honours student theses, and have ongoing research projects in archaeological science. High-level interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with colleagues is essential.

What We Can Offer

This is a full-time continuing appointment at Academic Level B (Teaching Focused). The start date will be negotiated, however the successful applicant will be expected to start teaching in Semester 1 2020. The full-time equivalent base salary is in the range $95,771 to $113,728, plus employer superannuation contributions of up to 17%.
