Job Details

The post involves providing technical support to facilitate the smooth operation of the teaching laboratory. This typically includes maintaining laboratory infrastructure, servicing equipment and managing chemical stock as well as technical support to teaching, outreach and external visitors. The role also comprises assisting the laboratory manager in education and administrative tasks. Our newly-refurbished teaching laboratories incorporate state-of-the-art instrumentation and a significant amount of IT and you will become involved in looking after these facilities. You will work as part of a team ensuring the synthesis-based laboratory is ready for teaching on a daily basis.

Applications are invited from candidates with enthusiasm for supporting students in their drive to learn practical chemistry; from candidates with an excellent work ethic and a strong commitment to getting involved in the general running of the laboratory. You are expected to adhere to our strict safety standards and deliver the best experience for our undergraduate students. Ideally, you will have some experience of (synthetic) chemistry.

Southampton is one of the best places in the UK for chemistry teaching and research and the Chemistry department has a national and international reputation for excellence. You will be based in one of the two teaching laboratories on the Highfield campus. Our chemistry laboratories are currently undergoing a £12 million refurbishment programme and reopen at the start of the new academic year. You will become a member of our successful technician team in the new teaching laboratories helping us to deliver excellence in chemistry teaching.
