The Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute (Swiss TPH) is a world-leading institute in global health with a particular focus on low- and middle-income countries. Associated with the University of Basel, Swiss TPH combines research, services, and education and training at the local, national and international level. About 850 people from more than 80 nations work at Swiss TPH focusing on infectious and non-communicable diseases, environment, society and health as well as health systems and interventions. The directorate is currently looking for a Chief Research Data and Information Security Officer.

As Chief Research Data (RDM) you have the responsibility to protect our "data gold" and to create overall framework conditions for research data management. This includes the creation, use and quality assurance of the data and definition of responsibilities, roles and processes on an institutional level. Furthermore, you provide planning and decision bases as well as risk assessments for the management with regard to research data management.

As Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) you provide strategic vision and direction in information security aspects of the institute. You develop policies and protocols for securing and protecting sensitive information.

Your position

Research Data Manager (RDM) ca. 50 - 70 %
  • Coordination, expansion and institutionalisation of lean, research-oriented and sustainable research data management
  • Consulting for researchers on research data management and long-term archiving
  • Development of work processes for the implementation of the research data management
  • Preparation of information materials and communication of the services and support
  • Participation / lead in development projects of the Swiss TPH Library in the area of long-term archiving and research data management


Information Security Officer (CISO) ca. 30 - 50 %
  • Setup policies, regulations and procedures for data protection in accordance with national and international regulations and standards
  • Advise and support users/groups/projects on specific questions regarding data protection Awareness for respective topics within the institute
  • Ensure adherence to the given regulations/policies/procedures
  • Establish, implement and monitor an effective risk management including implementation of risk mitigation measures
  • Coordinate security audits


Your profile
  • University degree (Master) preferably in natural sciences with research experience or doctorate
  • Minimum 5 years of professional experience in research data management, ideally in an academic environment
  • Experience in archives or libraries
  • Expertise in information and data security and IT-issues
  • Ideally completed computer science training and certification in the field of information security (CISM, CISSP, CRISC, CGEIT)
  • Best practice knowledge of research data management, data organization and data archiving
  • Strong problem-solving ability with the ability to exercise mature judgment
  • Independent work and ability to structure unstructured in the sense of the whole, without losing the overview
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with proven ability to interact at multiple levels of the business
  • Fluent in English and German, French is a strong asset
