Job Purpose
The main focus of this role is to provide clinical input to the development and maintenance of materials and assessments for use in the MBChB programme. This will involve developing a thorough knowledge of the Birmingham MBChB and using knowledge of how medical students learn to contribute to the design and updating of MBChB modules. The post holder will work with senior academic staff, education development specialists, and members of the Birmingham Digital Education team as well as appropriate administrative staff to meet these objectives. The post holder, as a qualified doctor with at least two years' experience working in hospital and/or community based clinical practice, will be expected to provide subject matter expertise in medicine.
The role is designed to improve the teaching materials available for medical students. It therefore has the potential to affect up to 2000 students per year. However, as the role will primarily focus on clinical teaching resources, the more immediate impact will be to 1200 students per year. This is also true for work undertaken on assessments within the MBChB. It is not anticipated that the post holder will hold research grants, but may contribute to the research efforts in medical education, development of grants and related proposals in relation to educational research work being carried out on the Birmingham MBChB and the development of research proposals for their own or joint pedagogical research if appropriate.
The post holder will be expected to undertake a Postgraduate Certification in Education for Health Professionals run at the University if this level of qualification has not been previously obtained. The post holder will be expected to engage in appropriate Continuing Professional Development (CPD).
There is no clinical practice component to this post and therefore no requirement to be currently registered with the General Medical Council or hold a Licence to Practice.
This role does not have any line management responsibility
This post is not directly linked to income generation
The organisation chart demonstrates that the post holder's reporting line is to the Programme Director for MB ChB. There are no roles reporting to the role-holder.
Main duties
• Under guidance from the academic supervisor who has the ultimate responsibility for the design, delivery and assessment of the module or teaching programme:
• Contribute to the design of modules with other colleagues including the development of on-line and face to face learning materials.
• Devise and supervise projects, student dissertations and practical work.
• Develop an approach to planning and reviewing own teaching.
• Teach courses at a range of levels within specified subject area and within own area of subject specialism to undergraduates, postgraduates and clinical faculty, predominantly through allocated lectures and seminars, so that the programme's teaching
objectives are met.
• Plan and prepare own teaching, including guidance notes and handouts in accordance with the established objectives of the teaching programme.
• Undertake full range of responsibilities in relation to supervision, marking and examining. (Summative assessment, including assessed work contributing to the final award - as a mark or as a credit - such as unseen examinations, essays, dissertations or
presentations, is subject to validation by the academic supervisor.)
• Contribute to the development and delivery of faculty development training sessions for clinical and non-clinical staff contributing to the MB ChB programme.
• Frequently update own subject expertise.
• Undertake personal professional development in teaching, including self-reflection on own teaching, using student and peer review feedback, to enhance own teaching and learning processes.
• Undertake management/administration arising from teaching.
• Contribute to College/Institute teaching-related activities and teaching-related administration.
• Contribute to public engagement activities of manifest benefit to the College and the University, often under supervision of a project leader
Person Specification
• Primary Medical Qualification (MB ChB, MBBS or equivalent)
• Minimum of 2 years full time post graduate training / experience after graduation (or its equivalent gained on a part time basis)
• Evidence of achievement of Foundation competencies in line with GMC standards / Good Medical Practice (or equivalent)
• High level analytical capability
• Ability to design and deliver module materials successfully
• Ability to assess and organise resources effectively
• Understanding of and ability to contribute to broader management/administration processes
• Eligible to live and work in the UK
• Good organisational skills including the capacity to manage time and prioritise workload, balance important and urgent demands, as well as follow instructions.
• Excellent communication skills, written and oral
• Ability to establish good relations with colleagues
• Excellent IT skills and enthusiasm for using these in the creation of learning materials
• An understanding of the methods and theory of assessment in medical education
• Ability to design and deliver module materials successfully
• Ability to assess and organise resources effectively
• Understanding of and ability to contribute to broader management/administration processes
• Enthusiasm for teaching undergraduate students
• Teaching experience in an undergraduate medicine context
Preferred
• Postgraduate medical qualification (MRCP, MRCS or similar)
• Postgraduate Qualification in Education
• Previous experience in a teaching oriented post
• Experience of creating learning materials for use by medical students
• Experience of running and developing scenarios for use in simulation
• Evidence of recent audit and research projects completed satisfactorily in the last 2 years.
• Knowledge of web-based learning design
