Background
The post holder will join a new MRC funded group in evolutionary dynamics of pathogens led by Dr Danesh Moradigaravand.
Summary of Role
The post holder will work with selected collaborators, based at universities and research institutes in the UK (Welcome Sanger Institute) and Sweden (University of Gothenburg) to design and implement statistical and mathematical methodologies to advance our understanding of the genotype-phenotype relationship in bacterial pathogens, in the context of antimicrobial resistance.
In particular, the post-holder will utilize predictive machine learning models to predict antimicrobial resistance from genomic data and to identify novel resistance determinants. The role will require mathematical, statistical and computational modelling skills to use and integrate population level Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) data of pathogens.
The post-holder will make use of existing methodologies and new methods based on deep learning and ensemble learning to analyse the data and interpret the results. Strong presentation and communication skills are required to convey complex information to both technical and non-technical experts. The post holder will be embedded within the group led by Dr. Danesh Moradigaravand, in the Centre for Computational Biology (CCB).

The candidate should have a first degree and a doctoral (PhD, DPhil) qualification (or be expected to have within 3 months of appointment) in an either a quantitative field (e.g. mathematics, engineering, computer science, physics) or an interdisciplinary degree with a strong quantitative component (e.g. bioinformatics, computational biology)

Main Duties / Responsibilities
Research

- Developing research objectives and proposals for own or joint research,
- Contribute to writing bids for research funding
- Develop novel methods to represent, compare and analyse Biomedical data
- Analyse and interpret data
- Apply knowledge in a way which develops new intellectual understanding
- Disseminate research findings for publication, research seminars etc
- Supervise students on research related work and provide guidance to PhD students where appropriate to the discipline
- Contribute to developing new models, techniques and methods
- Undertake management/administration arising from research
- Contribute to Centre/Institute research-related activities and administration
- Contribute to enterprise, business development and/or public engagement activities of manifest benefit to the College and the University, often under supervision of a project leader
- Collect research data; this may be through a variety of research methods, such as scientific experimentation, literature reviews, and research interviews
- Present research outputs, including drafting academic publications or parts thereof, for example at seminars and as posters
- Promote equality and diversity values, acting as a role model and fostering an inclusive working culture.
Person Specification

- Substantial experience of statistical or computational modelling gained within a research setting
- Hands-on experience of programming in Python/R
- Prior experience with machine learning algorithms is highly desirable, but not essential
- Background in population genetics, evolutionary biology or mathematical biology is highly desirable
- Experience with the analysis of biomedical data (especially microbial genomics data) would be advantageous
- Ability to assess resource requirements and use resources effectively
- Understanding of and ability to contribute to broader management/administration processes
- Promotes equality and values diversity acting as a role model and fostering an inclusive working culture
Further we require;
- Research experience demonstrated through successful publications
- Good Presentation skills and talent for technology and knowledge transfer
- Ability to work in a heterogeneous environment of Biologist, Bioinformaticians, Computer Scientists
- Effective interpersonal and communication skills (including written and presentational)
- The ability to work and think independently and to contribute to the planning of a programme of scientific research
- Effective organisational skills and the ability to prioritise work to meet deadlines
- Evidence of an ability to write to a standard required for research reports/publications
- Willingness to work flexibly, when necessary, to fulfil the needs of the research project
- Knowledge of the protected characteristics of the Equality Act 2010, and how to actively ensure in day to day activity in own area that those with protected characteristics are treated equally and fairly.
