The Professorship of Corporate Finance (Prof. Ola Mahmoud) in the Faculty of Business and Economics invites applications for a Research Assistant (Hilfsassistent/-in) position with a 20% appointment. We are looking for a motivated student who already holds a bachelor degree at the time of application.
Start date: October 1, 2019
Duration of the contract: initially for one semester and potentially extendable for another semester.
The project
This research project is jointly run and supervised by Prof. Ola Mahmoud (WWZ) and Prof. Lisa Goldberg (University of California at Berkeley, USA). The broad topic lies within sports economics. Professional sports offers a unique opportunity for labor market and corporate finance research, with wide ranging applications across other economics and finance fields. Moreover, comprehensive data over a long history are freely available, and changes in market structure and business rules over the years create interesting natural experiments that offer opportunities for analysis and potentially interesting insights. We are particularly interested in understanding the labor and financial economics of the professional NBA (National Basketball Association); that is how salary structures, salary caps, contract structures, free agency, player valuations, corporate team structure, etc. affect the individual teams' performance.

- Quantitative data analysis, research, and coding, including:
- Raw data pre-processing, data analysis and visualization
- Quantitative analysis of economic, financial, and performance variables
- Initial broad summary of the field's background and relevant literature
Your profile
The assistantship will require:
- A curious, motivated, and creative mindset
- Quantitative data analysis skills in R, Matlab, Stata, Python (or similar)
- Understanding of basic financial and economic concepts
- Experience and deep understanding of statistical analysis techniques
- Excellent writing and communication skills in English
- Basic experience with LaTeX
- Motivation to learn new research topics and tools
- Team spirit and interest in collaborative projects
We are looking for a candidate who:
- already holds a bachelor's degree;
- is registered within the University of Basel, preferably in a Masters program at the faculty of business and economics;
- comes with a background in Economics, Finance, Quantitative Social Sciences, Mathematics, or Statistics with a keen interest in finance and economics.
