The Unit for Academic Literacy invites applications for a coordinator and lecturer for the Academic Literacy component of Jurisprudence 110 and 120 in 2020.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The successful candidate will be required to coordinate the language component of JUR 110 and 120, which involves:
  • Designing and developing study guides as well as other print and online materials in collaboration with the Department of Jurisprudence;
  • Teaching three to four groups of students on a weekly basis, and marking test and assignments for these groups;
  • Liaising closely with the Head of Department and the course coordinator of Jurisprudence in terms of curriculum, assessment and administration;
  • Overseeing the work of two other lecturers teaching on the language course;
  • Dealing with questions and grievances that may not be solved by the class lecturer;
  • Doing academic administration and performing other duties, as determined by the Director of the UAL.


MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
  • An honours degree in English, Applied Linguistics or Linguistics, with some background in Law OR an LLB degree (or equivalent) with some background in English;
  • Solid experience in teaching English, Academic Literacy or Law;
  • Excellent oral and writing proficiency in academic English;
  • The ability to lecture large and diverse classes successfully;
  • The ability to work effectively in teams;
  • Proficient in using Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel and Microsoft PowerPoint.


RECOMMENDED REQUIREMENTS:
  • Experience in materials development
  • Experience in designing hybrid learning interventions
  • A record of recently published research and/or current research activity
  • Registered for a master's degree


The remuneration is on a per lecture basis, commensurate with the incumbent's level of appointment. Module co-ordination is remunerated additionally.
