The Biozentrum of the University of Basel is one of the leading life sciences institutes in the world. It consists of 32 groups and 500 employees that research how molecules and cells create life, spanning the scale from atom to organism. Founded in 1971, the Biozentrum has been the birthplace of many fundamental discoveries in biology and medicine, spawning several Nobel Laureates.

The Imaging Core Facility (IMCF) of the Biozentrum of the University of Basel is offering a position to a young scientist to enter the field of modern high-end light microscopy.

Your position

The candidate will support the IMCF by maintaining different state of the art wide-field, confocal, spinning disk, lightsheet (live-cell and cleared samples) and super-resolution (SIM, STORM/PALM) microscopes; will contribute to user training at microscopes and image analysis; and will participate in the teaching program of the IMCF. Your profile

We are looking for an enthusiastic person with a technical or research background that combines solid technical expertise with strong communication skills.

Suitable candidates are expected to have a university degree in life sciences or physics (master or PhD) and possess practical experience in at least two or more of the following fields: Optics, light microscopy techniques (widefield and/or confocal), live cell imaging, image processing.

The applicant should be rigorous, reliable, well organized and have the flexibility needed for working in a service-oriented context. Good communication skills in English and the ability to operate as a team player in a multi-disciplinary environment are required.

The position offers an ideal entry point into working in a microscopy facility environment. It is limited to two years but can be prolonged up to five years. The preferred starting date is January 2020 but can be negotiated.
