The Department of Library Services (DLS) at the University of Pretoria prides itself on being in touch with the present and future needs of our full range of clients, from undergraduate and postgraduate students to our leading internationally acknowledged researchers. New and advanced technology is selected and modified to enable DLS to be agile in meeting the requirements of its client base. One of the critical concepts in DLS is value-adding. The forward-thinking and pro-active management style of DLS leadership and the role of small focus groups to map this new library of the 21st century, make for a stimulating environment in which to work.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The incumbent will be required to lead and manage the University's library system strategically in support of the University's core functions and to collaborate with other members of the leadership team in developing the best approach for becoming a 21st-century library. This includes making recommendations on current and future methods for managing and distributing research data, developing an agile and lean support department, and supporting the achievement of strategic research objectives at UP.

This role will include the following:
  • Strategic leadership, planning and management;
  • Resources management
  • Financial management;
  • Fundraising;
  • Internal and external strategic communication;
  • Reputation, crisis and issues management; and
  • Communication and liaison.


MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
  • A master's degree in library and information science or relevant subject field;
  • Ten (10) years' experience in the field of LIS, of which five (5) should be in a senior management role.


REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):
  • Acknowledge leader in the library and information sector at national and international levels;
  • Proven exposure to and knowledge of strategic trends in the international library and information sector;
  • Proven success in the management of academic library and information services at a senior level;
  • Good understanding of the functioning of a university;
  • Demonstrated leadership abilities and interpersonal skills;
  • The ability to constitute a strategies management team and to lead organisational development and innovation.


ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES:
  • A PhD in library and information science or relevant subject field;
  • Proven experience at an executive management level in an academic library or similar organisation for at least three to five years;
  • Proven experience in identifying and applying the latest technological trends to advance digital library services;
  • Experience in a team-based, client-orientated, network organisation;
  • Proven ability to manage partnerships and to negotiate in the information sector;
  • Management qualification;
  • Proven leadership in a multi-cultural environment;
  • Proven track record of innovation, creativity and independent judgement.

The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent's level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED and UMVUZO medical aid schemes and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premiu
